Leslie- This past weekend, the Webberville Spartans faced off against Parchment and Bronson and emerged victorious to claim the Division III Regional title. Some of the major contributors included Dansville’s Erin Hunt, Cloe Neal and Elena Fajardo.
Game 1 vs Parchment:
The Spartans got on the board first and didn’t relinquish the lead after scoring one run in the second inning when senior centerfielder Alex Elowsky scored on an sizzling RBI single by sophomore Grace Hull.
Hull had a great day at the play going 2 for 3 with the crucial first RBI of the game.
Saturday was also great day for junior captain and team ace, Erin Hunt, as she tossed a shutout to carry the Spartans to a 3-0 victory.
Hunt was dominant throughout the game showcasing a 12-strikeout performance. The Spartans’ pitcher gave up just two hits over seven shutout innings. Catcher Maci Kubiak and the rest of the Spartan defense were stellar and did not allow a Parchment runner to reach 3rd base the entire game.
The Spartans were then able to tack on two more runs in the bottom of third. A ground out by Freshman DP Torri Simmons scored sophomore Kelsey Mayville to put the Spartans ahead 2-0. Reagan Tyler then came through with a clutch two-out single, scoring Hunt.
C Miller took the loss for Parchment . She lasted just six innings, walked one, struck out three, and allowed two runs.
GAME 2 vs Bronson:
Erin Hunt was flat out untouchable in the regional championship on Saturday, as she threw a no-hitter in the Spartans’ 2-1 victory over last year’s division 3 state runner-up, Bronson High School.
No Viking batter were able to locate the dominant arsenal that was on display. Hunt struck out 14 batters and walked none while the Spartan defense picked up the rest helping to record the memorable feat.
The bottom of the first saw the Spartans take an early 1-0 lead that started with a single by crafty senior, Alysa Badour. A single by Hunt then moved Badour from first to third which was followed by a big time, clutch, two-out hit by Grace Hull to drive Badour across the plate for the early lead.
The Vikings were able to get on the board in the top of the 4th to tie the game 1-1.
Mackenzie Tyler was just what the Spartans needed to take the lead for good in the sixth inning. Elena Fajardo reached on an error to get things going with one out in the sixth. She then went from first to second on a single by freshman Torri Simmons. Mackenzie Tyler then came through when her team and the large Spartan crowd needed it the most with a base hit to left field that scored Fajardo from second base.
Bronson pitcher, A Lasky was charged with the loss. She lasted all six innings, walked none, struck out four, and allowed two runs.
Webberville advances to the state quarterfinals for a match-up with Grandville Calvin Christian. The game will be played at Bailey Park in Battle Creek at 3:30pm on Tuesday, June 14th.
